A former US Army staff sergeant on Friday was sentenced to 90 months in jail over a scheme to solicit more than $400,000 in bribes from a contractor in Afghanistan, officials said. Stevan Nathan Ringo, 26, was also ordered by US District Judge T.S. Ellis to forfeit the proceeds of the scheme, which included $408,495 and other property, the Justice Department said.
Ellis ordered Ringo to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term. Ringo pled guilty on September 24 to one count of bribery. According to court documents, Ringo was stationed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Shank in the Logar Province of eastern Afghanistan, where he supervised fuel redistribution.
Ringo admitted that between December 2009 and February 2010 he accepted more than $400,000 in cash from a government contractor in exchange for fraudulent paperwork allowing the contractor to steal fuel from the base. The total value of the fuel stolen in the course of the scheme was nearly $1.5 million.
