A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore and University of Putra Malaysia (UPM), regarding co-operation in the livestock sector here on Saturday.
According to an official, Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Secretary Livestock Jehanzeb Khan, Vice Chairman Punjab Investment Board Rizwan Ahmad Khan, Managing Director Lahore Meat Corporation Dr Hamid Jalil, Chairman Halal Industry Development Corporation Malaysia and former Minister Dr Syed Jalal-ud-Din Saleem and UVAS Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz were also present on the occasion.
According to the agreement, co-operation will be extended on mutual exchange of delegations of livestock experts, teachers and students and research projects. Co-operation will also be promoted in the sector of Halal industry. UVAS Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz and Professor Dr Talat Naseer Shah on behalf of the Punjab government whereas University of Putra Malaysia (UPM) Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr Aini Ideeris and Associate Professor Dr Bashir Ahmad Fateh Muhammad signed the MoU.
Talking on this occasion, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif said Malaysia is an Islamic brother country of Pakistan and both the countries have strong friendly relations. He said Malaysia has made progress in different sectors and Pakistan can also benefit from its expertise. "Pakistan is rich in natural resources and we can improve the economy of the country by developing these resources," he added.
According to him, there are vast opportunities of development in livestock sector and not only poverty and unemployment can be eliminated by developing this sector but also huge foreign exchange can also be earned through livestock exports. This sector was ignored in the past but they are implementing a comprehensive programme for the development and betterment of this sector. For the first time in the history of the country, first consignment of 25 tones high quality Halal meat has been sent to Malaysia and second consignment of 15 tones will soon be sent. The best slaughterhouse of the country is being set up in Lahore in collaboration with Iran. The co-operation in the livestock sector between Veterinary University Lahore and University of Putra Malaysia is a good omen, which will help in the development of livestock sector.
He also lauded the efforts of the UVAS Vice Chancellor and Secretary Livestock for the improvement of livestock sectors. Head of the delegation Dr Syed Jalal-ud-Din Saleem talking on this occasion said that the agreement of co-operation in livestock sector between universities of Malaysia and Punjab would help in benefiting from experiences of each others. He said UVAS is playing important role for equipping the students with modern knowledge. He also paid rich tributes to the Punjab Chief Minister on the steps taken for the development of livestock and education sectors.
