Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza has directed the CCPO Karachi to hold meeting with business community of the metropolis and remove their grievances pertaining to alleged cases of 'extortion.' "A joint operation should be conducted by Police and Rangers on complaints of traders against those involved in extortion," he said here on Saturday.
According to a statement of Home Department, the Minister issued the directive after taking cognisance of reports of firing on shops allegedly by extortionist elements in the 'Food Street' located on Burns Road. The CCPO was asked to meet the shop owners of Food Street, besides, a series of meetings may also be held with the representatives of various associations of traders of important trade centres including Kharadar, Mithadar, Boulton Market, Jodia Bazar, Light House, Lea Market, Khada Market, Eidgah, Jamia Cloth market, Jubilee spare-parts, mobile and electronic market in Saddar on priority basis.
"These meetings should not be confined to discussions but result oriented," the Minister asked the CCPO. He said the protection to life and property of the business community was the prime responsibility of the police as they were the backbone of the economy of the country. "A close liaison should be kept with traders at various police stations and towns level so that rapid action could be taken on information of presence of any 'parhcee mafia' in the area," he added.
