Incidents of violence and arson, that began after the targeted killing of a senior worker of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Saturday, left 16 people wounded, while four vehicles were torched across the city.
Fear gripped many parts of the city including PIB Colony, Guru Mandir, Martin Road, Jail Road, Garden, Nazimabad, Soldier Bazar, New Karachi, etc, soon after the news of killing of Syed Yawar Abbas Jafferi, a senior worker of MQM and personal assistant of MNA Farooq Sattar, spread across the city.
All social and commercial activities in these areas came to a grinding halt and incidents of firing and arson by unidentified miscreants started. Miscreants torched some four passenger vehicles in different parts of the city including Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Martin Road and Nishtar Road.
According to police sources, an activist of MQM was shot dead in PIB Colony within the limits of PIB police station. They said that Syed Yawar Abbas Jafferi s/o Syed Ali Sardar Jafferi, aged 38 was killed near his house No 23 at Martin Road in PIB Colony.
They said that armed assailants riding a bike fired multiple shots at Yawar Abbas, injuring him critically, and fled. Yawar succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital. The victim was activist of MQM and had worked as Unit Incharge and Joint Sector Incharge of PIB Sector. Recently he was made personal assistant to Dr Farooq Sattar, Deputy Convenor of MQM.
Violence erupted in various areas of Karachi after Yawar's killing, as armed men resorted to firing in the air, forcing shopkeepers to pull down their shutters. They torched three vehicles in PIB Colony area and one at Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Gunfire was also heard in Hyderi, Korangi and North Nazimabad areas, which left three persons injured. Some 13 people also received burn injuries when the fuel tank of a torched vehicle exploded at PIB Colony. The injured were shifted to different hospitals. They include Jawaid aged 30, Muazzam 28, Shahid 28, Rais 40, Sharif 35, Abdul Rehman 40, Anees 28, Fahim 30, Alam Shehzad 40, Tauqeer 40, Tariq 55 and Wasim 35. SPO New Town Fakhr-ul-Islam was also injured in this incident. The heavy contingents of police and Rangers were rushed to control law and order in the disturbed neighbourhood. The protesters also staged sit-in at Rizvia Chowrangi after the funeral prayer of Yawar Abbas, which was offered at Rizvia Imam Bargah after Magribain prayers.
Meanwhile, Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza taking serious notice of the violent incidents in the metropolis directed police and Rangers to control the law and order situation in the affected areas and take stern action against miscreants without any discrimination. MQM Chief Altaf Hussain and Rabita Committee in separate statements expressed profound grief and sorrow over the killing of Yawar Abbas and demanded of President Zardari, PM Gilani, Sindh Governor Ishrat-ul-Ibad, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza to take immediate action against responsible persons.
