The Balochistan High Court on Friday stayed the process of leasing out some 500 acres land to Arab Sheikhs in Lasbella district, and issued notices to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government of Balochistan in this regard. Balochistan Assembly Speaker Muhammad Aslam Bhotani had moved the court to challenge the leasing out of the land piece to Arab Sheikhs by the provincial authorities.
In his statement through counsel, Bhotani had stated that the land belonged to the people of the area, but all steps of leasing were taken without consulting them, which amounts to the negation of the right of the people defined by the constitution". The court restrained the respondents, including Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government of Balochistan, from taking further steps in the matter till the next hearing date and orders.
Later Bhotani told a news conference that the court order was a triumph of the people of the area, and appealed to the Chief Minister of Balochistan to save the poor from being dislodged from their ancestral lands. He added that the area had been specified for Hangol Dam and had even been negated to be allotted to the Air Force for national security purpose.
