President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday said that Salmaan Taseer wrote with his blood a new chapter in the history of PPP's continued struggle for human rights, democracy and indiscrimination. He said this while talking to Begum Salmaan Taseer on the eve of the Soyem of the late Governor.
The president said that Taseer was a courageous political leader and a true follower of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto in treading their path to martyrdom.
Taseer's courage and determination in espousing the causes of the marginalised sections of society and readiness to pay the highest price for it will continue to inspire many, he said.
"His defiant cry against bigotry and his loud and clarion call for defending marginalized sections of society will echo in the annals of time." Taseer was an asset of the party," the president said.
"Few possess the courage of Taseer in standing up against bigots and fanatics, and fewer still show the readiness to embrace martyrdom for it", Zardari said.
He noted that Taseer was killed to sharpen the polarisation in society to derail the democratic process using the facade of religion. He expressed the hope that all the dirty hands behind the crime will be exposed and punished in accordance with law.
The supreme sacrifice rendered by Taseer will not go in vain, the president observed. President Zardari requested Begum Taseer to convey his condolence to other members of the bereaved family.
Begum Taseer thanked the president, saying that his words are a source of great strength for the family in this hour of tragedy.
