A close aide of President Asif Ali Zardari and President Zarai Taraqqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) Chaudhry Zaka Ashraf has emerged as a strong candidate for the governorship of Punjab after Salmaan Taseer's assassination on Tuesday, Business Recorder has learnt reliably.
Three other candidates for this slot are said to be Secretary General Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Jehangir Badar, Law Minister Babar Awan and Sardar Latif Khosa. Jehangir Badar had been tipped as governor of Punjab following 2008 elections and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif had supported his candidacy. This support, analysts argued, prompted Zardari to drop his name. "The ZTBL president Zaka Ashraf would be a neutral candidate and acceptable to Punjab government," sources maintained.
