Provincial Minister for Education and Transport, Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman has said that Punjab government is initiating a vigorous campaign to boost primary enrolment this year by fixing a target of 90 percent literacy rate for 2013, and steps are being taken to achieve 100 percent literacy rate till 2015.
He was addressing a prize distribution ceremony of spoken English course, held under the aegis of Educator Qila Dedar Singh. Shuja-ur-Rehman said that besides 63,000 public schools, private schools and educational institutions are rendering services towards promotion of quality education in the province. He further said Punjab government is providing scholarships to 6,000 talented students through an endowment fund of rupees six billion. He said that chief minister Punjab is making reforms in the education sector on war footing and due to these efforts, literacy rate in Punjab is now 62 whereas at the national level, it is 52 percent. He added that steps are being taken for promotion of education at every level and 8,000 schools are providing education to adults for achieving (desired) literacy rate.
The minister said that no one had thought that the children of common citizens of far-flung areas will get quality education but chief minister Punjab has not only made it possible through the Danish School system, but a new vista of development and progress has also been opened.
