Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) maintained its policy of zero tolerance against violations of traffic rules and equal application of law and issued 582750 traffic violation tickets and deposited Rs 107.6 million into national exchequer as fine during the year 2010.
It took action against public service vehicles to provide better transportation to general public and issued 1,11,560 ticket to wagons, 52,953 tickets to Suzukis, 44,129 tickets to buses and coasters and 58,352 tickets to trucks were issued, said Dr Moeen Masood, Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) on Friday while addressing a yearly review meeting of the performance of the ITP.
Likewise 65,487 and 1,87,331 traffic violation tickets were issued to motor cycles and private cars respectively, he said. He said that the ITP succeeded to maintain an exemplary traffic system in the Capital and its personnel followed the operational codes of the force in true letter and spirit during 2010 including elimination of VIP culture and equal application of traffic rules in the city.
ITP became model of excellence through its service-oriented policies and further endeavouring to come up to the expectations of the general public by ensuring traffic discipline in the city, he said. ITP was launched on January 28, 2006 and it came up with vibrant initiatives that decreased accident rate since its inception. The SSP said there is no alternate to life and ITP is making extra ordinary efforts to avoid mishaps on roads, which bring miseries to the family members of the deceased.
He said driving school of ITP was imparting standardised driving education and thousands of people had received driving training from the school so far. Excellent planning and strategy regarding traffic management also helped in reducing the ratio of fatal and non-fatal road accidents. During the year 2010, ITP issued 5,82,750 traffic violation tickets through which Rs 107506100 revenue was generated. The establishment of ITP has become the model of excellence for all law enforcement agencies in the country.
Hundreds of volunteers have also joined hands with the ITP who assist the ITP officers during enforcement, education and research. Education teams of ITP visited public & private organisations, trade and transport unions, universities, colleges and schools to inculcate road safety tips through road safety training. In these formal training sessions thousands of drivers & other road users have been educated.
ITP is corruption free, people friendly and service oriented organisation and the curse of corruption has been eliminated among the officers, the SSP maintained. During the year 2010, 68 VIPs were fined over violation of traffic rules.
Three Special Help Units are working round the clock. If any vehicle is stranded on the road, the unit provides mechanical help to the road users. Simultaneously all the field officers of ITP have also been directed to provide immediate help to citizens in emergency cases. The traffic Help line 915 is alert 24 hours and citizens can notify their complaints, their suggestions and seek help, he added.
