At least 11 people drowned when a boat capsized off India's south-eastern coast on Sunday, a news report said. The Indian coast guard and navy rescued 17 villagers from the Gulf of Mannar, a large shallow bay that separates India and the west coast of Sri Lanka, the PTI news agency reported.
Seven bodies were recovered in the operations so far, police told the news agency. Four women were among the dead.
The victims belonged to a fishing village in the Pamban district and were going on a picnic to islands in the bay when the accident occurred.
