Lahore High Court here on Wednesday dismissed a petition filed by Watan Party alleging adulteration in packaged milk products. The Court dismissed the petition after examining the report came to the conclusion that the allegations of contamination made by the petitioner against the milk packed in Tetra Pak packaging are unsubstantiated and contradicted.
Watan Party had invoked the constitutional jurisdiction of the High Court alleging that melamine and other chemicals injurious to human health were being used in the milk products. The court heard the arguments of the learned counsels for the manufacturers of packaged milk as well the Amicus Curie.
Barrister Syed Ali Zafar who was assisting the court traced the history of the case in all the reports submitted before the court, declared that the packaged milk in Pakistan is free from any contamination. He further submitted that in spite of this there were objections that the milk should be gotten tested by an independent best International Food Inspecting Institution. Accordingly, the court appointed Eurofins of Germany to conduct a thorough examination of all packaged milk products in Pakistan. For this purpose, samples of every packaged milk manufactured in Pakistan were collected from the market and sent to Eurofins. The report of Eurofins was submitted directly by the German Company to the court and was read out in detail.
In the report a thorough physical and chemical analysis of the milk in each product has been conducted including its fat contents and the examination of whether any chemicals like melamine, formal dehyde, urea, sodium and any fatty acids are existing. The report has then concluded that all the packaged milk products sent are "fit for human consumption."
