Inter-Services Public Relations Director-General Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Wednesday that the army would act upon whatever decision the government takes regarding the sit-in at Faizabad Interchange, which has entered its 17th day.

Earlier on Wednesday, at least four security personnel were injured when the protesters staging the sit-in resorted to pelting stones at security forces deployed in the area. Saddar SP Amir Niazi was also among the four injured Frontier Corps and police personnel, local media reported.

General Ghafoor said that while it would be better that the situation is solved through conflict-free means, however, the army would abide whatever decision the government takes. The general further added that when it came to the country’s security, the civil and military leaderships were on the same page. He added that the army would follow what the government instructs it to do.

IHC extends deadline to end Islamabad sit-in

On Tuesday, opposition leader in National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, while talking to media had said that the government should seek help from the armed forces to end the sit-in at Islamabad.

Despite government having two meetings with leaders of religious parties and protesters to end the sit-in, there has is still no breakthrough. On Tuesday, the Islamabad High Court had taken notice of the sit in and had given a deadline till today (Thursday) to end the protest.

The religious parties have been protesting against a reversed change in the Khatm-i-Nabuwwat oath in the Elections Act 2017. In protest to the government’s controversial amendment and reversal in the finality of Prophethood oath for lawmakers, two parties, Tehreek-i-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah and the Sunni Tehreek Pakistan, have been protesting to sack Law Minister Zahid Hamid.
