Taseer strongly favours RGST

Published Updated

Governor Punjab, Salmaan Taseer has said we will have to pay Reformed General Sales Tax (RGST) because without increasing the tax to GDP ratio it is impossible for Pakistan to attain self sufficiency. He said that some political parties have made 'political tamasha' on RGST. He was speaking on the 9TH Convocation of University of Central Punjab (UCP) here on Tuesday.
The convocation was addressed by Information Secretary Pakistan Peoples Party, Fauzia Wahab while chairman Board Of Governors UCP, Mian Amer Mahmood, Pro-Rector UCP Dr Tahir Hijazi were also present. Around 264 students were awarded degrees. Taseer said that Pakistan was the lowest tax paying country in the region where tax rate is less then 10 percent while country like Sri Lanka has tax rate of 17 percent.
He said that PPP believe in the politics of reconciliation. "It is world of knowledge based economy and we should focus on knowledge based subjects such as information technology," he said. He added that Pakistan was a country of bold people who fought bravely with the natural calamities like floods and earthquake. Pakistani nation was fighting war on terror for the last ten years and they take care of the largest number of IDPs in the world as well as refugees. The governor in his speech congratulated Faiza Attique, a student of Engineering, who received Roll Of Honour with 4 CGPA.
He said that girls were out shining boys in every field. Educated young women were playing an important role in progress of the country. Taseer also urged the students to play their role in the rehabilitation of flood affected areas. He appreciated the contribution made by chairman BOG Mian Amer Mahmood and his commendable role in the field of education. He lauded the progress made by Punjab Group of Colleges which began its journey as the Punjab College of Commerce and has made rapid strides to achieve the level of Chartered University with faculties like Commerce, Engineering, Management Studies, Law, IT, Art and Social Sciences.
Speaking on the occasion Pro-Rector of the UCP, Dr Tahir Hijazi said that higher education was fundamental to improve the quality of life and for ensuring social and economic progress. He also said that one of the biggest achievements of the university is it's role in research. He hoped that university would be among the top 30 universities of Pakistan in the next evaluation of Higher Education Commission. He said that university started a new chapter in social responsibility by involving students in the projects like wind turbine for electric generation, survey for improving facilities at airport and study to improve traffic system in Lahore.
