Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary here on Monday observed that corruption in the country can be eliminated by easing tax collection and streamlining the system. Presiding over a full bench, the CJ said this while hearing dozens of identical appeals filed by the Commissioner Income Tax against various commercial units granted relief in tax payment by Lahore High Court.
From the appellants' side, Muhammad Ilyas Khan contented that LHC passed the order without issuing notice to the income tax department. The Supreme Court, however, did not find any LHC order barring the department from issuing fresh notice to the respondents, setting criteria under the relevant part of section 177 (d) of the Audit of Income Tax Ordinance.
Commenting on the performance of FBR, Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday said although the department has an army of tax collectors but is showing performance below the mark and swallowing billions underhand as nothing is coming to the exchequers. He said loot is everywhere and no one is there to take stock of the situation. On this, the CJP remarked that one window operation could work well to streamline revenue collection and adjourned further hearing of matter till the first week of February.
