Even high security alert during Muharram-ul-Harram could not reduce street crime in Islamabad as over 100 incidents of theft, robberies, purse snatching, car lifting, cheating and attempt to murder were reported last week. In about 106 incidents reported last week people were deprived of valuables including cash, cars, motorcycles, gold jewellery, watches, cell-phones and other stuff valued at over Rs 75 million.
The data collected by Business Recorder from all 14 police stations of Islamabad showed that 75 outlaws including twelve women were nabbed during the week for their alleged involvement in street crimes, bootlegging, drug peddling, dacoities, car snatching, robberies and other crimes. In operations against the suspected persons over 200 including 120 motorcyclists were held. People were deprived of 12 vehicles during the week that include five Suzuki Mehran cars, one Suzuki Alto, one Suzuki Khyber, two Suzuki Vans, one Toyota Corolla, two Shahzor mini trucks, besides four motorcycles.
Police have recovered three Kalashnikovs assault rifles, two repeater rifles and one 12-bore gun from the detained outlaws while 12 pistols (30-bore and 32-bore), two daggers and over 500 bullets of different caliber were also recovered. Islamabad Police during the week recovered 1.5 kilogram heroin, 4.5 kilogram charas and 120 bottles of wine. Police have busted five gangs of criminals involved in arms and drug smuggling, bootlegging, robberies, car snatching, theft and prostitution.
Islamabad Police in league with Rangers and Frontier Constabulary managed the security of the capital in a way that Ashura passed peacefully in the capital. But on the other hand it has failed to bring the crime rate down. This was the general view of people, who demanded that the Capital Police should devise a strategy to control crime and give people a peace of mind.
Rizwan Jaral, an educationis who teaches at a Federal Government college told this scribe that complete peace during Muharram-ul-Harram was a feather in the cap of Capital Police. However, they have to take measures to ensure elimination of crime. We leave the house with fear of robbery, dacoity and theft in our mind, when the managers of the city will remove this sword hanging on our heads?
