Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that provision of modern transport facilities to the people is among the top priorities of the government and solid measures are being taken for this purpose. He said that an effective policy for solid waste management and provision of a healthy environment to the citizens is also being implemented and an agreement is being signed with Istanbul Municipality (Turkey) in this regard.
He was presiding over a meeting regarding transport facilities to the people and solid waste management in the cities, here on Sunday. Chairman Lahore Transport Company Kh. Ahmed Hasaan, Secretary Transport, Managing Director Solid Waste Management and Chief Executive Officer Lahore Transport Company were present on the occasion.
The Chief Minister said that negotiations are being held with Korea and other countries for providing better transport facilities to the people of the province. In addition to provision of transport facilities, planning is also being made for the construction of parking plazas, he added. He said the state-of-the-art Park & Ride project in Liberty Market has been completed in a record period of time while suitable sites are being identified for the construction of twelve more parking plazas in the provincial metropolis on the same pattern. He directed Chairman Lahore Transport Company to take all possible measures for providing quality transport facilities to the people as soon as possible. He said an agreement is being reached with Istanbul Municipality for solid waste management in the provincial metropolis and the document will be signed on December 27.
Chairman Lahore Transport Company Kh. Ahmed Hasaan briefed the Chief Minister about provision of transport facilities to the people and construction of parking plazas. Managing Director Solid Waste Management highlighted the salient features of the agreement to be signed with Istanbul Municipality.
Meanwhile, during a meeting with assembly members, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif said that corruption and misappropriation of funds in the development projects has become a thing of the past and public money is being utilised in a transparent manner. He said culture of transparency has been promoted in the province and the condition of third party audit of all development projects is being strictly implemented. Third party audit system was also introduced in the last tenure of his government but during the dictatorial era this condition was withdrawn and public funds were looted mercilessly, he added. He stated that the government is the custodian of every penny of public money and all resources are being spent on the welfare of the masses. He said corruption is the biggest hurdle in the development of the country and collective efforts are needed by all segments of the society for its elimination.
