The Parliamentary Committee on judges' appointment on Sunday approved Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman's nomination as the first Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court (IHC) by the Judicial Commission. The parliamentary body also cleared two other names nominated by the judicial commission as judges of the IHC.
The committee, which met here with Senator Nayyar Bokhari in the chair, approved Judicial Commission's nomination of Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman, a judge of Lahore High Court, as IHC Chief Justice.
The committee also approved nominations of Tariq Anwar Kansi, a district and sessions judge Quetta and Justice Riaz Malik of Peshawar High Court as judges of the IHC.
The Judicial Commission on December 4 recommended the name of Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman, 56-year old judge of Lahore High Court, as Chief Justice of the IHC.
Talking to media after the committee meeting, Nayyar Bokhari said that the committee had approved judicial commission's nomination for the Chief Justice and other two judges of IHC. He said the names had been approved unanimously by the committee, saying that the committee would now send summary to the Prime Minister.
It is to be mentioned here that the re-established Islamabad High Court (IHC) has started partially functioning from December 13 by starting admitting cases sans judges. A source in the law ministry said that IHC staff was already working for the last two months, whereas over 1,600 cases had been shifted from Islamabad district courts to the IHC. He said over 5,000 cases from Lahore High Court's (LHC) Rawalpindi Bench was being transferred to the IHC.
Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman is the son of former Chief Justice of Pakistan (Late) Hamood-ur-Rehman, who headed a judicial commission to probe into the causes of Pakistan's disintegration in 1971, was one of the judges who had declined to take oath under the Provisional Constitution Order promulgated by former president Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007.
