NA committee suggests SSGC to at look other options for gas

Published Updated

na_400KARACHI: NA Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources has asked Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) to use other options for acquiring natural gas including conversion of coal into natural gas to meet the shortage in the country.

Chairman NA committee MNA Sardar Talib Hassan Nakai, talking to media after chairing the meeting at SSGC head office here Friday, said that renowned nuclear scientist Dr Samar Mubarak Mand is working on this project and he will undertake an experiment early January next year to produce natural gas from coal in Thar.

He said that SSGC can take gas from Thar coal field after the successful experiment.

Nakai said that a large number of foreign and local companies are anxiously waiting for this experiment and they are interested to invest in this project. However, this project will take at least four to five years to get materialized, he added.

He said that the committee has supported LPG project of the company to provide gas to off grid consumers. The price of this LPG will be equal to natural gas, he noted.

Nakai said that NA committee will soon table a resolution in the National Assembly pressing the government to chalk out a strategy for handling the current energy crisis in the country on war footing.

Earlier, managing director SSGC Azim Iqbal Siddiqui in his briefing to the committee said that the company was working to bring in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in its network. SSGC has acquired the modern LPG terminal from Pro Gas.
