ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Wednesday that United States would vacate the Shamsi airbase as per deadline given by the government.Talking to media outside the Parliament House, he said"We are expecting that the US will vacate the Shamsi airbase as per deadline given by the government.".

To a question, he said around 36,000 persons have lost their lives in the war against terrorism. He urged the US to stop drone attacks. The drone attacks have been condemned by the government, opposition and people of Pakistan.

"US must pay attention to the voice of people of Pakistan and stop drone attacks as these are against the sentiments of people," the minister said.

To a question regarding President Asif Ali Zardari, he said the statement issued by a presidential spokesman is authentic in this regard, urging the people not to pay attention on rumors.

Commenting on peaceful observance of Ashura, Rehman Malik said the strategy adopted by the government in consultation with provinces yielded required results.

He further said law and order situation in the country has considerably improved due to steps taken by the government. "I am not saying that law and order situation has improved hundred percent but considerable improvement has been witnessed."

He said the government is taking all possible measures to ensure speedy justice.

To a question about a meeting held with US ambassador on Wednesday, he said it was a routine matter and during the meeting bilateral issues were discussed.

Replying to another question regarding resignation of Senator Azam Swati, he said it would have been much better, if Azam Swati would have criticised and resigned when he was in the government.
