TORONTO: Toronto's main stock index ended higher on Monday, propped up by a rise in the energy and financial sectors, but the market gave up much of its early gains after a report Germany and other European nations could be downgraded.
The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index unofficially closed up 44.24 points, or 0.37 percent, at 12,119.33. Earlier, the index climbed 1.6 percent to 12,268.91, its highest level since Nov. 16, on optimism that European policymakers were on their way to designing a plan to resolve the euro zone's debt crisis.
