National Assembly Standing Committee on the Narcotics Control on Thursday urged the authorities to expose all those involved in the narcotics trade irrespective of their status and affiliation, to rid the country of narcotics. The committee met in the Parliament House with MNA Murtaza Javed Abbasi, Chairman Standing Committee on Narcotics Control and urged the need to take steps on a war footing to eradicate the menace of drug addiction.
Sources said that the committee members also emphasised to keep a vigilant eye on the porous Pak-Afghanistan border, which, they pointed out, is the major source of narcotics flood from Afghanistan. The committee also observed that a powerful mafia is behind those involved in narcotics trade, and urged to expose and discourage them.
The committee appreciated the proposed five-year master plan on drug control prepared by the Ministry of Narcotics Control (MoNC) on the direction of the prime minister and the efforts to make Pakistan a drug-free-state. The committee acknowledged that it is our collective responsibility to be more proactive and vigilant in combating the curse of addiction.
The committee directed that all those involved in the drug trafficking irrespective of their status be exposed in the media and their cases pending in the courts be expedited for which the services of eminent lawyers/ prosecutors may also be acquired. The committee recommended that existing treatment centres for the rehabilitation of drug addicts may be expanded and new centres established all over the country with concerned departments' involvement.
Federal Secretary for Narcotics Control gave a detailed briefing on the proposed five-year master plan of the Ministry for drug control. The meeting was attended by Arbab Muhammad Zahir, Minister of State for Narcotics Control, MNAs Wasim Akhtar and Humair Hayat Khan Rokhari. Senior Officers from the Ministry of Narcotics Control were also present.
