Parliament has authority to set up a commission

Published Updated

hosaLAHORE: Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khosa has said under the Constitution, only parliament has the authority to set up a commission on any national issue and it can also review any decision by judiciary.

He was addressing a press conference here at Governor's House on Friday. Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Warraich and PPP South Punjab President and Federal Minister for Textiles Makhdoom Shahab-ud-Din were also present.

Khosa accused Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of plotting against the government and democracy and added that Nawaz Sharif was using the backdoor channel to come to power.

He said, "The PML-N is conspiring to send a body of the fourth political leader from Punjab to Sindh but people of Punjab, who have self-respect, will prove that they are not part of the plot."

On behalf of both provincial presidents of the PPP, the Governor announced the launch of a "Wafaq Bachao Tehreek" by holding party meetings in all districts of Punjab for the supremacy of parliament.

He termed Nawaz Sharif's petition a conspiracy to pitch state institutions against each other.

"The PML-N leadership is in search of some backdoor to come to power since it knows that it cannot defeat the PPP in next elections," he added.

On the petition in memo case, he said "The court has not given time to the Federation to present its viewpoint on the subject before passing an order and I cannot understand it," he added.

He said that the democratic government was already investigating the memo issue in a civilised manner by constituting a 14-member committee headed by Raza Rabbani and all parties had been given representation in it. "In this situation, the court decision is incomprehensible," he added.
