KARACHI: Country is in dire need to bridge the gap between available resources and ever growing number of population, said the speakers at a seminar organized by Karachi chapter of Pakistan Medical Association on Thursday last.
Dr. Wasima Zulfiqar in her presentation," Reproductive Health and Modern Day Challenges," said modern day safe contraceptive techniques have to be properly utilized.
"These must also be made easily accessible to people pertaining to lowest socio-economic rung often living in least developed parts of the country," she said.
The doctor stressed that accessibility of couples, particularly women, to safe reproductive health facilities must be duly recognized as their basic right.
"We can significantly reduce our maternal mortality and morbidity rates through due care towards reproductive health needs of women," said the senior gynecologist.
Referring to available international data, she said there are at least 200 million women around the globe who are keen to make use of safe and efficient modes of contraception.
"Yet are unable to do so due to lack of information, poor accessibility to relevant facilities and above all missing support of their spouse as well as the community," said Dr. Wasima Zulfiqar.
She said that it was in the given backdrop that 50 million women among 190 of those getting pregnant each year resort to unsafe means of abortion with 740,000 losing their battle for life.
"We have to save these women who die of preventable condition," she stressed. Dr. Wasima Zulfiqar said 21 years to 35 of age are universally established to be the most appropriate time for women to conceive and bear children.
"This is the time period in the lives of most of the women when they are socially, emotionally and physically stable enough to deliver," said the doctor.
She urged the doctors and medical students attending the seminar to realize their responsibilities towards masses and motivate couples for adequate birth spacing. "We must also discourage early marriages for the general well being of our people," said Dr. Wasima Zulfiqar.
Dr. Ismail Memon, Joint Secretary, PMA Karachi said the medical community in general has to realize their role as motivator and educators so as to bring about a healthy change in the attitude of people towards health.
