President, Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday awarded Sitara-i-Khidmat on Ms Guenet Guebre-Christos, ex-country representative of UNHCR for her support in providing assistance for relief and rehabilitation to millions of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. The President gave away the award in a ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr here. Ms Guenet served as country representative in Pakistan from February 2004 to August 2009.
She is also credited for carrying out the first ever census and registration of Afghans in Pakistan in 2005 and 2007 as well as initiation of a five-year development programme in the refugees affected areas to mitigate the long term impact of Afghan refugees. She also played a pivotal role in the relief and rehabilitation efforts in the wake of the devastating earthquake in October 2005.
