The National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) organised a one-day training workshop titled "Community Education for Human Rights" for community leaders at the Centre for Peace and Harmony in Faisalabad. The purpose of the workshop was to impart human rights education, to promote interfaith harmony and religious tolerance, and to guide community leaders for the solution to the problems existing at community level.
Twenty-five Muslim and Christian participants including teachers, lawyers, councillors, students and representatives of civil society organisations actively participated in the workshop. The resource persons of the workshop included Father Nisar Barkat (Director-NCJP), Firdous Chaudhry (Co-ordinator CEHR), Behram Khan, Suneel Malik, Anwar Chaudhry Advocate and Yousaf Adnan.
Father Nisar Barkat said, "It is government responsibility to ensure equal distribution of opportunities and resources among citizens regardless of any discrimination, and to ensure removal of class divisions from the society, to make Pakistan a just and civilised society".
"Government should eliminate biases and discrimination from the constitution, laws, curriculum and policies on the basis of religion, sect, sex, ethnic and language for making Pakistan a non-violent and peaceful territory", he added. The trainers of the workshop said.
"It is imperative for human rights activists to multiply awareness on human rights and peace, and to raise voice against injustices and human rights violations for a better society". "It is the need of the present era that every citizen of Pakistan should play a positive role for the promotion of peace, social harmony and religious tolerance", they added.
