Robby Ginepri, who was laid low by a burst appendix earlier this year, won his second Indianapolis title on Sunday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over third seeded compatriot Sam Querrey. The 62-minute win repeated the triumph which Ginepri enjoyed four years ago and was the third title of his career.
Ginepri, who missed two months of the season and lost nearly 15 kilograms in weight following appendix surgery, had not reached a semi-final before this week since Las Vegas in March, 2008. Querrey has now lost in finals in his last two events after going down a fortnight ago on grass in Newport to Rajeev Ram. Ginepri out-aced the usually big-hitting Querrey, firing four aces and 13 winners while Querrey dropped nine costly double faults.
"This is a special place for me," said Ginepri after the sixth all-American Indy final in two decades since the event switched to hardcourt. "I've not been in a final for a long time and to win again here is great." After playing only 21 matches this season, he was unsure of his chances of getting back into the top 20 where he stood in 2005 after winning Indy for the first time.
"Without results, you start questioning your game," he said. "I haven't been to final in four years (at Indy). "You question if you can play at this level any more, it creeps into back of mind. But this is a true confidence boost for the summer. "I'll go to LA from Monday very excited. I feel fit and ready to fight some more. "My ranking will move up and I can get into more tournaments, maybe even a Masters series in Asia and Europe this autumn."
The title was Ginepri's third after Indy 2005 and Newport 2003. He broke serve twice in a 26-minute opening set, then secured the upset by coming back from 40-0 down in the 11th game of the second. "When I won here in 2005 I was about the same ranking," said Ginepri.
"But this one has to be more special as I really never expected it "I got the job done. I really had no expectations but I had no pressure either. It's funny how things work out." Querrey said admitted he was nervous and his usually reliable big serve let him down. "I didn't have a rhythm on serve today, it was not there," he said.
