Pakistan Naval ship PNS Tariq has supported and gave safe passage to South Korean ship MT Sunshine Sky, which was going to Bandar Imam Khomeni from Jeddah and was attacked by a speedboat with rockets, says a press release.
It may be mentioned here that Pakistan Navy is participating in Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan (CMCP) called Maritime Component of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in line with government of Pakistan's decision to fight terrorism in all its manifestations. The CMCP is being commanded by HQ United Sates Central Naval Command (HQ US Navcent), Bahrain.
Pakistan Navy is contributing a Destroyer with embarked helo in direct support of CMCP and presently, PN ship is deployed in CMCP for 23 times. On April 1, 2008, task group of Pakistan Navy ships Tariq and Moawin, while transiting through North Arabian Sea supported and assisted the Korean ship which was en-route to Bandar Imam Khomeni from Jeddah.
When it was about 30-40 nautical miles from Yemen coast, one speedboat attacked the ship with rockets. Pakistan Naval ship Tariq promptly proceeded to render assistance to the ship and intercepted the merchantman about 10 to 15 nautical miles from Yemeni coast and observed 01 x hole of 40 cm dia on Stdb side of its funnel and 01 x hole of 10 cm dia in its life boat.
Due to prompt action of PNS Tariq, the speedboat ran away from the scene. Later PNS Tariq also provided the safe passage to the ship and later rejoined PNS Moawin. It is pertinent to mention that Arabian Sea, Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Aden and Red Sea collectively form the most important maritime regions of the world.
The CMCP and particularly Task Force 150 is providing stability to the region, by checking movements of the terrorist elements over maritime domain and providing humanitarian assistance including anti-piracy operations.
Despite resource limitations, Pakistan Navy remains committed to support coalition forces in consonance with government's policies. Through this participation PN has made its place in the forefront of global war on terrorism and above said incident is the manifestation of the same.
