President General Pervez Musharraf has appointed Justice (Retd) Malik Muhammad Qayyum as a new Attorney General of Pakistan. The notification in this regard was issued here on Wednesday. Earlier the President had accepted the resignation of Makhdom Ali Khan, Attorney General of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the two Deputy Attorney Generals Raja Irshad and Naheeda Mehboob Elahi have also been relived from their positions. Malik Muhammad Qayyum had also represented the President, in the reference against the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court. Justice (Retd) Malik Muhammad Qayyum, was born on December 18, 1944. He started his career as legal practitioner in 1964.
In 1970, he was elected Secretary Bar Association, Lahore. In 1980, he was elected President District Bar Association, Lahore. He was elected Member Punjab Bar Council for the period 1984-88.
He was appointed Deputy Attorney-General of Pakistan on February 13, 1984 and held that post till elevation as Judge of the Lahore High Court on October 26, 1988. In addition to his responsibilities as a Judge of the High Court, he was a Member Pakistan Law Commission and Chief Editor, Pakistan Supreme Court Cases. He appeared as counsel in many important constitutional, civil and commercial cases.
