Michelle Wie withdrew from the US Women's Open after nine holes of her second round on Saturday because of her injured wrist. The 17-year-old American, who is enduring a miserable season, had shot 82 in the first round of the women's major and went out in six-over-par 42 on Saturday. On 17 over par, she was tied at 146th of the 155 competitors when she pulled out.
"It was a little sore when I woke up this morning," said Wie, who broke her left wrist in a fall in January and spent five months out of action. "I tweaked it when I hit my drive on the 17th (her eighth hole) and it went downhill from there."
After hitting a shot out of the rough at the 18th at Pine Needles, Wie grimaced and turned away her head in pain. She then called for her physiotherapist Leanne Quinn, who is part of her entourage and walks with Wie outside the ropes.
Quinn massaged the wrist but Wie then hit a poor tee shot into rough at her tenth hole. After punching her second shot on to the fairway, the Hawaiian teenager told her playing partners, Christina Kim and Natalie Gulbis, that she was going to pull out.
