The second spell of monsoon rains on Saturday again played havoc with the city, inundating roads, streets and residential areas and disrupting traffic in many part of the city for several hours. As soon the rain started, major parts of the metropolis remained out of electricity.
Despite, the huge allocation for the municipal services by the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) primarily aimed at sorting out any untoward situation in the wake second monsoon spell. But the civic administration failed to cope with the situation with just 37-mm rains in the city.
Soon after the rains on Saturday evening, rainwater on roads turned into a full-fledged river stream, creating problems for the pedestrians, while the dug up roads further added to the miseries.
Common citizens, who mostly rely on the public transport, have suffered a lot as after the rains, the number of public transport was decreased. As a result, the commuters, especially the office-goers, reached their homes after several hours due to unavailability of the public transport and traffic chaos.
It has been observed that no municipal personnel was seen on the roads to pump out the accumulated rainwater, which created problems for the motorcyclists, who faced difficulties in getting their bikes out of the knee-deep water.
The most affected areas in the metropolis are areas are Keamari Town, including Masan Chowk, Bhutta village, Tara Chand Road, Keamari Post Office, Sultanabad, Mohammadi Colony, Agra Taj, Wazir Mansion.
In addition, life in Landhi Town, Sherpao Colony, Landhi Industrial areas and its adjoining parts, Shireen Jinnah Colony, Punjab Colony, PIDC, Delhi Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Johar, Korangi and Site Towns, Korangi Industrial area, Lee Market, Kharadar etc was completely paralysed.
Similarly, Most affected roads hit by rains included M. A. Jinnah Road from Merewether Tower to Numaish Chowrangi, Guru Mandir and its adjacent roads, Sharea Faisal, FTC More, Chaudhri Khaleequzzaman Road, University Road, Jail Chowrangi and its adjacent roads, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Shahrah-e-Liaquat, Customs House Road, Kharadar Road, Talpur Road and Hassan Square Chowrangi where rain played havoc with the traffic.
On most roads, traffic police disappeared after the rains began which also caused heavy traffic jams. People in several towns faced serious hardships, as no relief activities from the concerned departments were seen.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast more rains and weather will remain cloudy with thunderstorm, while temperature will be in the range of 33 degree centigrade to 35 degree centigrade. Minimum temperature on Saturday was 29 degree centigrade and maximum 36.5 degrees centigrade. Humidity was 100 percent.
