The National Public Safety Commission (NPSC) has asked the provincial governments to take urgent measures to insulate police department from undue extraneous interference from any quarter.
Acting Chairman NPSC Moeen-ud-Din Haider presided over the 13th meeting of the commission here on Thursday at National Police Bureau. He told the media after the meeting that the commission particularly took note of the poor compensation levels of police and demanded that the provincial governments need to improve substantially the working conditions of police to avoid recurrence of incidents like the one that happened recently in Islamabad.
He said in order to improve police performance, a survey was conducted by Devolution Trust for Community Empowerment (DTCE) to take the suggestions of police officials.
Haider said the commission has decided to request DTCE to conduct such survey in four provinces to also ascertain public perceptions in improving police performance. In the meeting the commission discussed the overall crime situation in the country, particularly aspects of violence against women, he said adding a draft annual policing plan was also reviewed that would be given to provincial governments for effective policing.
The commission stressed the need for an effective police accountability system in the country, Haider said adding NPSC had held its meeting with provincial public safety commissions each in NWFP, Sindh and Balochistan and asked them to make them more active.
