Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (Parc), the apex research organisation, has actively taken up development of inland and marine fisheries sector along with livestock, and poultry industries, this was stated by Professor Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi, member Animal Sciences, Parc, Islamabad on Tuesday.
She was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of a one-day seminar on 'Sustainable Fisheries in Pakistan'. The seminar was organised by the Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology, University of Karachi.
She highlighted about the organisation and said that fisheries board is almost approved and will be actively involved in meeting the requirements and emerging challenges of sustainable management of marine and freshwater fisheries and aquaculture.
Dr Shahana also chaired first technical session along with Professor Dr Shahid Amjad, Acting Vice Chancellor and Dean of Marine Sciences, Lasbella University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences, Uthal. Earlier, Dr Itrat Zehra, Director, Center of Excellence in Marine Biology, said that taking cognisance of vital issues of over-fishing, habitat loss due to harmful fishing practices.
Dr Naureen Aziz Qureshi, from Center of Excellence in Marine Biology and Principal Investigator, ALP-PARC project discussed about the seminar, and the problems of emerging, ephemeral new jellyfish fisheries and how to manage it. She talked about ecosystem-based management of marine fisheries, which means to manage the effect of the environment on the resource, and conversely, the effect of resource exploitation on the environment.
