The grandchildren of former soldiers, decorated by the British during the World War I heroics burnt their ancestral medals in Kalat to protest the knighthood conferred on Slaman Rushdie, reports BBC.
The medals were burnt at the residence of former Commissioner Muhammad Anwar Zehri in Kalat. Anwar Zehri said that the British government has hurt the religious sentiments of the Muslims by conferring knighthood on Salman Rushdie.
He said that British Captain Grates had also granted lands to their elders in Nasirabad, which called Grateabad and demanded to rename the area.
The British government had conferred awards and medals on Baloch soldiers for their bravery during World War I between 1914 and 1919. Anwar Zehri appealed to Baloch Sardars and Nawabs to return the awards of Khan Bahadar, Sardar Bahadar and Dewan Bahadar to the British government.
