Sialkot District Nazim Muhammad Akmal Cheema has pledged that full co-operation will be extended to "District That Work" projects for its complete success in the district.
Inaugurating the USAID-funded district assistance office here on Tuesday, he said that this effort would help the district government in improving service delivery for the people specifically in the areas of health, water and education. "The DTW project" would also be supportive in improving other fields of the district government in improving other fields, Akmal Cheema said.
Speaking on the occasion, chief of the DTW project Michael Sinclair disclosed that after Mansehra, the second office in Sialkot, had become operational The DTW project will work in the nine selected districts of the four province of Pakistan.
In the first phase, the programme will be carried out in Mansehra, Khanewal and Sialkot, Sukkur and Dadu, and Lasbela in Balochistan, while three more districts would be included in the second phase of the project, he added.
Michael Sinclair disclosed that 26 million-dollar three-year USAID-funded project aimed at enabling local government to improve management for better service delivery, while the project would help the district and teshil governments in improving service delivery to citizen through improved management and greater participation of citizen in government planning, budgeting and decision-making.
The project will engage key stakeholders, the district administration, district council, besides the civil society, community-based organisations, each providing specific set of skills and support based on expressed needs to help the district functioning efficiently, he added.
The Party DTW project chief said the project would also help improve strategic planning and local economic development planning, develop human resource management skills, and help implement mechanism for involving civil society organisations and community based organisations in decision making.
Under the programme, hands on technical support and respond to training needs and requirement would be extended to the district government officials as well as it would provide a forum for discussion with all counterparts on challenges to effective governance, he added.
Michael Sinclair said the project would provide help capacity-building of the district administration in financial and non-financial management, find new options for own source revenue generation, achieve improved budgeting, financial management and compliance with the applicable rules and achieve improved compliance with accounting and audit requirements.
A large number of people, belonging to various walks of life, attended the inaugural ceremony. Besides, USAID Public Relations Manager Sarah Pervez and other officers were also present on the occasion.
