The National Highway Authority (NHA) on Wednesday approved rehabilitation and reconstruction of strategically important highways in earthquake-hit areas, including PC-I for upgradation of Raikot-Khunjerab Section of Karakoram Highway with an estimated cost of Rs 30 billion.
The approval was given by the NHA Executive Board, that met here with Major General Imtiaz Ahmed in the chair to discuss several important road projects, especially in quake-hit areas.
The Batgram-Thakot (N-35), Basian-Balakot-Naran (N-15) and Kohala-Muzaffarabad (S-2) were amongst the critical highway projects, which were approved by the board.
The meeting underscored the importance of these highways for the people of said areas and stressed upon early completion of projects.
The board gave nod to submitting PC-I to ECNEC for widening, improving and upgrading the Raikot-Khunjerab Section of KKH. The 335-km long project will cost about Rs 30 billion and would be completed in four years. The government is making hectic efforts to upgrade Karakoram Highway to establish National Trade Corridor (NTC).
The Executive Board also discussed the federalisation of Taxila-Haripur road that forms an important inter-provincial link between Punjab and the NWFP. It also connects G T Road (N-5) with the Karakoram Highway.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Imtiaz Ahmed said NHA was working diligently to materialise the government's vision to make Pakistan a hub of trade and energy corridor. He said efforts were being made to complete the projects in time and at the minimum possible cost.
