imageISLAMABAD: Pakistan's female tennis ace Ushna Suhail has said that Pakistan's last week's win in Davis Cup tie against Iran would also help promote women tennis in the country.

"Pakistan successfully held this event after a gap of 12 years. I'm sure this will not only promote men tennis in the country but will also open the doors for foreign women players to visit Pakistan and play here," she told APP.

The 23-year-old, who competes on the ITF Pro Circuit tour said, it was heartening that the Davis Cup returned to Pakistan and country's male players showed their dominance over Iranian players.

"The event was a great success from every aspect. Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) had worked really hard for that. Now I hope women from other countries will also visit Pakistan to play," she stated.

She hailed Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) for renovating the hard courts at Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad, but was of the view that more funds were needed to uplift the standard of the game in the country.

"We've very talented male and female players but as you know tennis is an expensive game, they need proper sponsorship and backing to match the class of players of other countries," she added.

Ushna, who is the South Asian Games double bronze medalist in singles and mixed doubles and also Pakistan's first world-ranked female tennis player in singles and doubles stated that all those who wanted to see Pakistan players performing well at the Asian and world level must come forward for tennis's promotion in the country.

"People are backing cricket. That is a good thing. But I believe they should come also forward and get involved for the promotion of tennis and other sports," she maintained.

She said the successful holding of Davis Cup tie had conveyed a very strong message to the world that Pakistan was safe for all sort of sports activities.
