ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan issued on Thursday an interim order to reopen wine shops that were sealed in view of Sindh High Court (SHC) orders across the province.
During the court proceedings today, Justice Saqib Nisar asked the legal counsel under which law the licenses were issued?
To which, Counsel Shahid Hamid informed the bench that licenses were issued under Article 17 of the Constitution.
Earlier in October, the Sindh High Court had ordered the provincial government to shutdown and revoke licenses of all liquor shops operating in the province.
The high courts decision came after the religious figures from Hindu, Christian and Sikh communities told the bench that it was a false that their religions allow consumption of wine on special occasions.
SHC Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah had questioned the authorities concerned under what law wine shops were allowed to operate throughout year if no religion permitted its consumption.
According to the excise and taxation department, there are 120 liquor shops across the province out of which 59 are in Karachi including 11 shops which were being operated in DHA and Clifton areas.
