All measures taken to overcome energy crisis: Mandviwalla

Published Updated

saleem_mandviwallaKARACHI: Government of Pakistan is taking all measures to overcome the on-going energy crisis in the country and mainly the focus would be on hydel power and other cheap sources of power generation.

This was stated by Minister of State and Chairman Board of Investment (BoI) Thursday while addressing the Multilateral Investment & Trade Conference 2011 organised here by BoI in collaboration with the business forums of 10 foreign countries.

"Besides hydel power, options are being studied to attract foreign investment to tap the resources to generate power through solar and windmill energy," he pointed out while addressing the concerns of foreign delegates who had come especially to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan.

He said during the last over a year the country fetched foreign investment worth over dollars 1.6 billion in various sectors of economy.

The BoI chairman said that compared to the past, the number of queries from BoI for investment by foreigners was on constant rise which was a big achievement by the government.

He told the possible investors that government intends to attract priority investment in sectors including infrastructure and energy, engineering, agriculture and dairy, mines and minerals and pharmaceuticals.

He said that government was working together with private sector for socio-economic development of the country and providing one-window facility to foreign investors.

Mandviwalla said that government was providing very attractive investment packages and incentives with all facilities to attract foreign investment.

Speaking on the occasion, the ambassador of Japan Hiroshi OE, said that his country has decades old business relations with Pakistan and added that it was enjoying very cordial trade and business ties with the local business community.

He said that Japanese government would act as a catalyst to attract foreign investment by hosting investment conference in Tokyo next year to provide a platform to private sector of both countries to inter-act on investment opportunities in Pakistan.

The joint business forums and foreign delegates from Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, Sri Lanka and Switzerland attended the conference.
