Taiwan stocks up; Apple suppliers pressured

Published Updated

taiwanTAIPEI: Taiwan stocks opened higher on Wednesday, though Apple's major supplier Hon Hai fell after its California-based client reported results that missed expectations for the first time in years.

Shares of Apple's supply chain were also pressured by media reports that Chinese environmental organizations said 27 of the companies have pollution issues.

Touch panel maker TPK Holding tumbled 5.36 percent, while notebook casing supplier Catcher was limit-down for the third consecutive session. Catcher said it has been ordered to close a China plant due to pollution issues.

Hon Hai traded down 0.94 percent soon after opening.

The main TAIEX index rose 34.25 points to 7,393.73, after ending down 1.36 percent in the previous session.

The semiconductor sub-index climbed 0.17 percent, after Intel Corp forecast fourth-quarter revenue above Wall Street's expectations.

Banking shares rose 0.91 percent.

Foreign investors were net sellers on Tuesday, offloading T$2.744 billion.
