Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has said that industrial activity in Nooriabad Industrial Zone (NIZ) has improved and in the last two years 100 units have started production.
He was talking to 17-member businessmen's delegation, which called on him at the Governor House on Thursday. Sindh Adviser on Finance M. A. Jalil, Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal, Principal Secretary Mohammed Saleem Khan, Commerce and Industries Secretary Aslam Hayat Khan and other concerned officers were also present on the occasion.
The governor briefed the delegation on various investment options and said that the present policy of the government was to make closed down units operative and encourage fresh investment.
He said it was only two years ago when only five units were operative in Nooriabad, whereas more than 100 units were operative today.
He said that the law and order situation in the province had improved, rural Sindh such as Thatta and Kotri have resumed industrial activities and numerous queries from abroad were being received seeking information of investment potential in the province.
He said that to provide support to the industrial activities a large number of development projects were in progress and many more are in the pipeline awaiting implementation. He said that the pace of development in Sindh has improved and which is why abandoned projects are being infused new life. The governor asked the visiting German businessmen to come to Pakistan and invest in the field of their choice.
Ibad said that Pakistan was the fastest growing economy of the world and had excelled in all the fields of trade, commerce and industry. He said that investment in Pakistan was safe and rules for foreign investment had been simplified to facilitate quick processing of each application for investment. He assured the delegation that its members would be facilitated to explore market.
The governor said that the government was making efforts to check unemployment and poverty. To achieve these objectives various measures have been adopted. The results are successful and encouraging. He said that a large number of people were dependent upon agriculture and keeping this situation in view far reaching reforms had been carried out to encourage them. "Our emphasis is on introducing new technology and on the improvement of water management."
He said that there were mega projects under implementation to improve agricultural activities. He said that agriculture was another area where investment could be made.
Earlier, a German delegation of Die Star Company under the leadership of Dr Bernhard Clemens Frerich called on the governor and sympathises on the October 8 earthquake. Representatives of the company in Pakistan also accompanied the German delegation and presented a cheque of $50,000 for the relief and rehabilitation work in the earthquake areas.
