Veteran Indian socialist leader and former federal finance minister Madhu Dandavate died on Saturday after a long battle with cancer. His only son was by his hospital bedside in the western city of Mumbai when he died aged 81, the Press Trust of India said.
Dandavate was a five-time member of parliament from 1971 to 1990. He also served as the railway minister as well as holding the finance minister's portfolio.
