The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal on Saturday said the real problem of the country is not sectarianism and extremism but regular military intervention and violation of the Constitution. Speaking at a news conference here at Jamaat-i-Islami camp offices, MMA deputy parliamentary leader, Liaquat Baloch held the military governments from General Ayub to Musharraf responsible for the current situation.
"Instead of tidying up the mess they created themselves during regular interventions, the army are making foes' task easy by arresting their own citizens and beating up the female students" he deplored.
Liaquat Baloch said the President's address would fan extremism and polarisation in the country rather than diminishing them. He said Musharraf was exploiting the international situation to prolong his "illegal and illegitimate' rule.
The MMA leader said the blasts in London and elsewhere appeared to be a reaction against the attitude of the West towards Muslims.
He said the efforts for world peace and harmony would bear no fruit in the presence of US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and called for pulling out foreign forces from these countries for the sake of global peace.
Liaquat Baloch termed the 7/7 blast an engineered conspiracy, like the one against Iraq and Afghanistan, to target Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Syria.
"The US and its allies have not been able to prove any involvement of the then Taleban-led Afghan government in September 11 attacks, and failed to justify their invasion in Iraq," but he deplored that their war is still continuing against what they had failed to prove.
He said the government has bitterly failed to uphold the sovereignty and dignity of the nation by acting at the behest of the US.
"On the external front the government has not been able to safeguard the country's interests," Liaquat Baloch said.
Musharraf government's unilateral steps of confidence building with India have done great harm to the ongoing freedom struggle in Kashmir and damaged country's old stance on the occupied state.
"MMA has been planning an All Parties Conference (APC) over the prevailing situation in the country," he said, adding date and venue of the conference would be finalised in the supreme council meeting being held on July 27 at Islamabad.
The MMA leader brushed aside the impression that the proposed Hasba bill was in violation of the Constitution
He said the bill is an important step towards achieving the basic objectives of Shariah. The basic concept of the Hasba bill is to provide immediate relief to the downtrodden people of the province.
Responding to another question, the MMA deputy parliamentary leader said they had struck an agreement with the ARD on three-point agenda: resignation of Musharraf, election of a new president according to Constitution, besides pledge not to support any military coup in future.
