Punjab government was striving hard to improve the jails' conditions and in order to make them reforms centers, a composite developmental plan has been prepared, while new jails and additional barracks are also being established.
Rana Ijaz Ahmed Khan, Provincial Advisor to Chief Minister for Law and Human Rights, said this while talking to prisoners during his inspection of Camp Jail here on Saturday, disclosed an official.
The Advisor informed them that additional barracks for the inmates were being established in 25 different jails, while the problem of overcrowding was also being addressed through establishment of new jails in the districts of T. T. Singh, Vehari, Layyah, Pakpattan, Bhakkar and Okara under the Access to justice Programme. "Sixteen ambulances have been provided to 16 different jails at a cost of Rs 8.8 million," he added.
Rana Ijaz also inspected the security arrangements of the jail. He was informed that a x-ray scanner and an electronic walk through gate have been installed to tighten the security.
During his visit of barrack of NAB prisoners, the prisoners complained of inhuman treatment meted-out by the jail authorities. The Jail administration informed him that security arrangements have tightened after recovery of laptop, CDs and porno magazine from the NAB prisoners.
On the occasion, he was informed that as many as 3,125 prisoners were confined in the jail and has the capacity to accommodate 1050 prisoners. As many as 500/700 petty offenders were being freed by District and Session Judge on monthly basis.
