The controversy over giving degree-awarding institution status to Overseas Pakistani Foundation (OPF) Girls College, Islamabad seemed to have deepened as the government on Tuesday failed to offer students any permanent solution of the problem. At a news conference here, State Minister for Overseas Pakistani Division Tariq Azim said that the government was ready to affiliate the college with a Karachi-based university, but ruled out early decision on degree awarding status for it.
But some students, who have been studying for two to four years in the college, but not being awarded degrees now, turned down the minister's offer and kept on insisting that they wanted to have their degrees from OPF only.
The minister, however, proposed to form a committee comprising parents, students and college administration to take up the matter of degree awarding status with Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr Attaur Rehman.
On Monday, number of students held a demonstration to press authorities for giving degree awarding institution status to OPF Girls College, Islamabad.
Some 180 were enrolled in different disciplines from 2002 onward in OPF Girls College, Islamabad, but they were not being awarded degrees due to institution did not have this status.
