imageLAHORE: Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and Pakistan Steel Melters Association (PSMA) for training of skilled manpower in steel melting industry related short courses.

TEVTA Chairman Irfan Qaiser Shaikh and FPCCI Regional Chairman Mian Rehman Aziz and PSMA Chairman Mian Tariq Iqbal signed the MoU document on behalf of their respective organizations here at the Federation's Regional Office.

Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said the MoU aimed at providing trained manpower for steel melting industry. He elaborated that short courses of three months including Operators (Induction furnaces), Technicians Electrical and Mechanical (for repair and maintenance) would be started specifically for steel melting industry at TEVTA institutes in Lahore and other cities of Punjab.

These courses, he added, would be started at Lahore as a pilot

project and after successful completion it would be launched in other cities also. Two month on the job training would be essential for enrolled trainees to be held at respective steel industry and over 500 skilled workers would be provided annually to steel sector.

Punjab Board of Technical Education (PBTE) and Trade Testing Board (TTB) would issue the certificate to successful candidates. Mian Rehman Aziz said, "Youth transformation is a big challenge we are facing, so TEVTA should introduce demand-driven short courses for implementation of the vision of Chief Minister Punjab to increase job opportunities."

He pointed the gaps between TEVTA and the business community, adding that TEVTA should develop an approach to make businessmen their strategic partner and frequently arrange seminars and awareness sessions for business community at various chambers of commerce and industry, and trade associations.

The PSMA Chairman said that steel industry was facing shortage of trained manpower therefore they would provide master trainers to TEVTA for training its faculty. Realizing the gap between demand and supply of trained manpower for steel melting industry, he viewed that collaboration with TEVTA would help them overcome the manpower gap.

He assured, "We will assist TEVTA in designing the curricula for these courses and make prime efforts in job placement of passing out trainees, ensuring maximum employment of trainees in the industry at Lahore."

Representatives of FPCCI and PSMA including Syed Aasim Shah, Hameed Akhtar Chadda, Mian Iqbal Tariq, Maj (R) Mansoor and Muhammad Saeed, Jalil-ur- Rehman attended the meeting.
