European vegoils little changed after volatile week

Published Updated

ROTTERDAM: European vegetable oil prices moved sideways on Friday as both sides of the market took a breather after a volatile week, market sources said.

"Jobs data in the United States proved to be an excellent excuse for both buyers and sellers to hold back and relax a little ahead of the weekend," one broker said.

At 1630 GMT CBOT soyoil futures were between 0.02 cents per lb down and 0.22 cents per lb up, mainly supported by stronger mineral oil and an easier dollar.

Liquid oils were quoted between 1 euro per tonne down and 5 euros up, mostly following the trend in CBOT soyoil futures, while easier rapeseed futures and a weaker dollar, which weighed on euro-priced products, pressured gains.

Feb/April EU rapeoil changed hands at 903 and 905 euros per tonne fob exmill, unchanged from Thursday, and May/July traded 4 euros down at 903 and 904 euros fob.

Palm oil was offered between $2.50 a tonne up and $51 a tonne down, supported by the weaker dollar after Malaysian palm oil futures closed between 24 and 39 ringgit per tonne down on worries that the global economy will slide into recession.

Jan/March delivery RBD palm olein changed hands at $945 and $940 a tonne fob Malaysia, down $5, while April/June traded $2.50 down at $945 and $942.50. Crude palm oil fetched $957.50 a tonne cif Rotterdam for April/June.

Lauric oils firmed on the weaker dollar and were offered between flat and $35 a tonne up from Thursday, with palmkernel oil changing hands at $990 and $995 a tonne cif Rotterdam, up $5, and Dec/Jan at $995 cif. Coconut oil prices were hardly tested and no business was reported.
