Woman diplomat named Australian envoy to Pakistan

A veteran woman diplomat with experience in Canberra's intelligence community was named Friday as Australia's top envoy to Pakistan. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Zorica McCarthy would take over as Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan in August, replacing Howard Brown.
McCarthy is a career diplomat, who also spent four years as an assistant secretary in the office of National Assessments, the department that prepares intelligence analyses for the prime minister.
In announcing the appointment, Downer hailed Pakistan's role as "a front-line state in the war against terror" and noted that bilateral co-operation had broadened to include combating terrorism and countering illegal migration.
