In a significant development, the National Alliance has decided to unify with Pakistan Muslim League on the desire of President General Pervez Musharraf.
Speaking at a news conference after meeting President General Pervez Musharraf, the alliance leader MNA Farooq Leghari said that the President had appreciated their decision, saying it would have positive impact on future politics.
However, Leghari maintained that the alliance's unification would be possible only after unification of all the Muslim League factions. He sounded optimism on PML-Alliance unification next month.
Quoting President Musharraf, he said that in the given national, regional and international scenario, the lesser political polarisation the better it would be for the country.
The alliance leader said that the process of restoration of democracy would be completed when President Musharraf would doff his uniform before or on December 31.
When asked about his views about the discussion whether or not President Musharraf should quit as the chief of army staff, he said this particular issue was not discussed during their meeting with the President.
In response to a question, he said that President Musharraf could decide to take the ruling Muslim League's top slot, however, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain would continue to be a senior leader.
He supported President Musharraf's policies and said that under his leadership, the economy had shown considerable improvement and Pakistan's image abroad elevated.
The alliance leader made it clear that he believed in the supremacy of the Parliament and the rule of law. He laid emphasis on concerted efforts to eliminate corruption from various departments.
The Sindh Democratic Alliance is the other entity before the National Alliance that announced to be part of the Pakistan Muslim League.
Insiders in the ruling League told Business Recorder that it would not be at all easy to accommodate all the parties, awarding them key slots in the unified party structure.
In this connection, they made mention of PML (Functional) demand for the slots of senior vice-president, secretary general and provincial chief of the party.
They said it was easy to make announcements but the real test would be when key slots would be given to various political figures.
