Pakistan Navy will soon establish a base at Gwadar to provide security and safety to the static and moving assets at the port, sea-line and along the shore.
The Government of Pakistan has shown readiness to provide necessary assistance for completion of the task, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Shahid Karimullah said, while talking to a visiting team of journalists from Islamabad.
The team was given comprehensive briefings on various subjects related to maritime interests and strategy to defend them in an appropriate manner, especially keeping in view the fast developments taking place in the neighbourhood and the prevailing geo-strategic situation.
The Naval Chief appreciated that President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali have full understanding about the needs of Pakistan Navy and are taking practical steps in this direction.
This would be the third naval base of the country, after Karachi and Ormara.
With the establishment of a naval seaport at Gwadar, the extreme pressure on Karachi base would not only be considerably shared, but also it will help in expanding the scope of country's defence along the shore and in the deep sea waters.
"Due to inherent slow movement of the naval vessels, it has become imperative to establish another base along the country's coast but much away from the coast of Karachi," he said, adding, "the coast of Ormara would ensure presence and mobility of its moving assets during any hour of need."
During the briefing it was also revealed that the Pakistan Navy is in the process of implementing second phase of construction at Jinnah Naval Base Ormara where maintenance facility for the naval ships and submarines would be provided. Implementation of this phase would commence by the end of this year, he said.
"We are heading with step-by-step approach towards construction of the Jinnah Naval Base," Admiral Shahid Karimullah stated.
