In recognition of the firm resolve, steadfastness and operational preparedness displayed by the armed forces during stand-off with India from December 2001 to December 2002, President Islamic Republic of Pakistan has conferred "Tamgha-e-Istaqlal" on all ranks of the armed forces and paramilitary forces of Pakistan.
This medal is being instituted to recognise the resolve, determination, high level of professionalism and utmost vigilance shown by the officers and men to guard the frontiers of the motherland.
